Every installation requires a specific type of cable conductor to function effectively. Conductor cables are classified into two types: solid and stranded or multi-stranded. Stranded conductors are made up of smaller, thinner wires that are packed together in a single insulated cable. Stranded cables are more flexible, easier to install in confined locations, and can withstand vibrations. These conductors are ideal for speaker cables, access cables, and security cables. Solid conductors have a single copper wire and must be treated differently than stranded cable. Because solid conductors are rigid, they must be put in locations where there is little movement, such as walls, conduit, and ceilings. This also allows them to transmit data across long distances.
Fire alarm, thermostat, coaxial, and category cables are all used extensively by solid conductors.
