Algoma Steel has tapped Mississauga, Canada-based EllisDon as construction manager for its electric arc furnace project, the manufacturer announced in a press release last week.
The project originated in 2021, when Algoma Steel’s board of directors approved two new EAFs to replace its existing blast furnace and oxygen steel making operation. The new facility is designed to reduce Algoma’s carbon emissions by 70%. When finished, the building in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario — near the Michigan border — will produce 3.7 million tons of raw steel annually, up from 2.8 million.
