Ayoba is the African equivalent of WhatsApp. “Ayoba” is South African slang meaning “okay”.
Currently, the software supports 33 African languages, including Afrikaans and Swahili. But, more importantly, the app allows users to talk with anyone, regardless of whether or not they have the app, i.e. app to SMS and SMS to app.
This is significant given that 2G accounts for 46% of connections in Sub-Saharan Africa (fDi Intelligence).
Since its introduction, Ayoba has swiftly accumulated 2 million members and 27,640 positive reviews. Monthly downloads are expected to total 500,000.
In addition to texting services, the firm has expanded its app to include over 50 news and sports channels.
Available on Google Play.
